For Roberto Matta, architecture, physics, and science fiction were essential elements. In some of his paintings, satellite-like mechanical elements float among shades of color, evoking extraterrestrial travel and futuristic scenarios. The intersection of complex forms and the surreal, space-age atmospheres that characterize some of Matta’s works anticipate the spatial visions that would later influence science fiction cinema. George Lucas himself wrote a letter to the artist in 1977, declaring that his paintings had inspired the visual imagery of Star Wars.
